Friday, Sep 1st, Budapest, Hungary


Greetings!

This is the midpoint of our latest travels.  Most of our travel companions from the first OAT tour have caught their flights home, We've said goodbye to our Guide (William), and we're hanging out in the Presidential Hotel in Budapest for one extra day.  Our flight to Sofia, Bulgaria (via Serbia) leaves tomorrow morning at 9:30am.  So tomorrow will be a travel day, and there probably won't be much happening except flights and airports. 

Tonight, we're going to dinner with another great couple from the first tour, and then I may just hit the hotel hot tub.  It's visible from the main glass elevator, and I'm just that much of a exhibitionist to try it out (with a bathing suit).

Greetings! Instead of going to Corvin Castle today, Pat complained enough to get the day targeted on the  Astra Museum of Traditional Folk Civilizations .  It covers a square mile of Dumbrava Forest, and is the largest open-air museum in Romania, and one of the largest in Central and Eastern Europe.  There are over 300 houses, two large lakes and 10 miles of walkways.   Beginning in 1905, efforts to create what was then dubbed "a shelter for keeping the past" began.  First titled the Ethnographic Museum, which morphed in the 1960's into an open-air museum with high folk technology as its theme, then became part of the Brukenthal Museum Complex, and finally it inclluded elements of housing and community buildings.  There are really old wooden structures which house functions you can definitely imagine were necessary, but you probably have never seen before.  We saw mills of every size on the many creeks, presses for every commodity and aimed at cr...

Wednesday, Oct 26th, Bundaberg

Greetings! Today was a long driving day, ending in a haircut.  After arriving in Bundaberg, and unloading in the  Spanish Motor Inn , we decided to drive downtown and check out the classic older buildings by the river.   Passing a barbershop that was serving one of its last customers, Pat reminded me that I had agreed to get a haircut about two months into our trip.   Stopping inside, we asked if they had time for one more.  The main stylist didn't, but he said that his apprentice did, if I agreed to let him.  I did, and we spent the next hour getting to know the wonderful staff and owner of Slick's Barbershop.   I came away with new friends, who we are eager to return the favor anytime they want to visit us.   To see the photos taken today, click on Wednesday, Oct 26th, Bundaberg .

Friday and Saturday, Oct 28-29th, Hervey Bay

Greetings! Just when we thought our trip couldn't get any more challenging, I crippled our car in a truck stop in Bundaberg.  How many of you know there's an additive put into diesel trucks that crystalizes the engines of automobiles when you substitute it for gasoline.  Well, I didn't.  Getting gas at a huge Liberty station at noon to make the 5-hour drive from there to Hervey Bay, I had a choice of diesel, diesel plus, and AdBlue.  I knew not to put in diesel, but so the third alternate hd to be some form of gas.   Wrong.  At $2.99/liter, Pat knew something was wrong.  but not soon enough to stop me from destroying our car.
